Guide To Frisbee: Facts and Finds
Nowadays, the flying disc needs no introduction as it moves from niche to mainstream. Anything resembling a disc tossed through the air is considered a Frisbee - from a foldable fan to a photo light. Even the original purpose of it has been upgraded, from once being a mere recreational tool to now having official sports built around this equipment.
It makes one wonder: what’s the magic behind a Frisbee, and what makes these so alluring to the general public? We look at the history of it and how it has evolved to date.
Why is it called a Frisbee?
The word Frisbee is a deliberate misspelling from a once-famous bakery in Connecticut, USA. Frisbie Pie Co was frequented by college students for its scrumptious pies and logo-stamped tin pie pans. Often discarded after eating, some resourceful students flung these pans around for fun instead.
For someone who frequented the community, hearing echoes of, “Frisbie!” was a common occurrence, used as a warning of sorts that a disc was up in the air. Through the years, Frisbie stuck as the unofficial name of the game.
When the bakery closed in 1958, the founders of Wham-O adopted the name for their plastic discs which were about to be released to the public. Adding a slight spin, they coined the iconic “Frisbee” we know today.
Is Frisbee a sport?
While it started out as a casual hobby, the game eventually leveled up among college students and became a competitive sport. Ultimate Frisbee was founded in 1967 - a hybrid between three famous sports: basketball, football, and soccer.
Similar to these, the game is played by two competing teams whose goal is to throw the disc from their starting point to their end zone on the opposite side of the field. The defense must try to stifle this attempt by intercepting the disc throws while following rules of non-contact sportsmanship.
With its relatively young set of pioneers, it didn’t take long for this sport to catch on, especially among younger kids. And it’s easy to see why the game is so popular - all you need to play Frisbee is a group of friends, and a field, and you’re good to go.
What are the three types of Frisbees?
Frisbees are determined based on the distance these can command when thrown. Distance drivers are wide-rimmed plastic discs that are made for long-range throws. Mid-range discs are a healthy middle in terms of size and navigation, making them a favorite among beginners. Lastly, a Putter disc has the thinnest rim and is used for short and straight distances.
